Leytonstone sits between two parts of Epping Forest: Wanstead Flats to the south and Leyton Flats and Hollow Ponds, by Whipps Cross, to the north. Between them, High Road Leytonstone and Church Lane form the town centre around the station, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces spreading out on both sides, the larger houses of Bushwood beside the grassland, and Harrow Green to the south. Living on the edge of the woods

Streets that border this open land get more wildlife than the rest of east London. What we see most:

Squirrels. Mature trees on the common land and along the streets give squirrels a way onto roofs, and they chew into lofts through weak spots at the eaves. The noise, chewed insulation and gnawed cables usually give them away.

Foxes. Foxes den under sheds, decking and extensions in gardens near the grassland, and dig up lawns and beds. Fox control begins with finding the den and proofing the space.

Autumn rodents. As the nights draw in, field and house mice leave the grass for somewhere warm. Victorian homes with air bricks, loose pipe entries and suspended timber floors let them straight in.

Rats. Gardens near Hollow Ponds see rats living beneath sheds and by compost heaps.

Proofing first

Wildlife will always be close by here, so keeping it out of the house matters most. After treatment we close up the entry points we found: eaves and roof lines against squirrels, pipe entries and air bricks against rodents, and the ground-level space beneath garden buildings against foxes.

Cafes, restaurants and shops on High Road Leytonstone and Church Lane need regular checks for mice and cockroaches. We keep a written record of every visit.
