When a pest problem is urgent

• A wasp nest by a door, a window, a path or a play area, or anywhere near someone who is allergic to stings.

• Rats or mice in a kitchen, or anywhere food is prepared or stored.

• Bed bugs found in a home, a rented room or a hotel.

• A smell from a dead animal inside a wall, under a floor or in the loft. See dead animal removal.

• Pests found at a business, especially a food business.

What to do until we arrive

Wasps

Keep away from the nest entrance and keep nearby windows shut. Do not block the hole or spray it yourself: disturbed wasps defend the nest. If someone is stung and has trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips or throat, call 999. The NHS has guidance on insect bites and stings.

Rats and mice

Put food away in sealed containers, keep children and pets out of the room, and do not try to corner a rat. Do not touch droppings with bare hands. We find how they are getting in as well as dealing with the rodents, so it does not happen again.

Bed bugs

Keep sleeping where you are rather than moving to another room, which can spread them. Wash bedding at 60°C or above, and do not throw out the mattress before treatment. See the bed bug treatment cost guide for what else you can do now.

A dead animal smell

Ventilate the room and keep pets away from it. Do not lift floorboards or open up walls yourself; tell us where the smell is strongest and we will find the source.

For businesses

If pests are found at a restaurant, shop, office or school, stop using the affected area where you safely can and call. We survey, treat and advise on proofing and housekeeping, and can set up regular visits to keep the site clear. See commercial pest control.
