Southgate N14 is the district around Southgate Circus and its 1930s Tube station, running up Chase Side and out to Oakwood in the north, with the old houses of Southgate Green to the south and Grovelands Park on the eastern side. It is not the same place as New Southgate, N11, to the south west, which has its own page.

Interwar suburbs with long gardens

Most of N14 was built between the wars: semi-detached and detached houses with long back gardens, garages and sheds, and some older villas near the Green. The gardens and the parkland around them shape what we are called for:

• Rats under sheds, decking and garden buildings, and near compost heaps and bird feeders. They reach houses through damaged drains and gaps around pipes at ground level.

• Squirrels in lofts, especially in streets lined with mature trees and near Grovelands and Oakwood Park.

• Wasps nesting in lofts, garages and sheds from mid summer.

• Mice in cavity walls and under floors once the weather turns cold.
