Fleas are not that uncommon in people homes, especially if the home has a pet. The most common flea is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) and second is the dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis).
Both species will feed on all animals as well as bite humans. It’s when they start biting us is when they really start to become a nuisance.
Signs of Fleas
Common signs of fleas are skin itches or bites, your pets excessive scratching, physically seeing them hopping about or finding flea dirt (adult flea faeces) on your pets coat.
Do fleas from my pet present a health risk to my family?
Yes. Fleas can carry and transmit several potential illnesses of importance to humans, including typhus and plague, and can transmit “cat scratch disease” (infection with Bartonella) among cats who can then spread the disease to humans. Additionally, fleas serve as an intermediate host for tapeworms, which can infect your pet and occasionally humans.
